BMW i3 and plug-in hybrid BMW i8
BMW AG BMW I3 introduce electric vehicles and plug-in hybrid BMW i8, as the first model to be sold under the sub-brand "i" is formed. In a written statement, the plan both models will be marketed starting in 2013 and built at the BMW factory in Leipzig, Germany.
"BMW i respresentasi a new movement mobility premium," said Ian Robertson, BMW's marketing in a written statement. "By introducing new sub-brand, the BMW Group will be the leader of innovative premium car company, and sustainable."
With this decision the German manufacturer is going to accompany the Audi which had already made a sub-brand of the same electric car nicknamed E-tron. The first Audi model to be based batteries will be sold in 2012 is the R8 supercar.
So far the policy of pressing the CO2 emissions in Europe that will take effect in 2012 has hit the automotive industry to take new technologies.
BMW's own claim to have invested around 400 million euros (547 million U.S. dollars) and add about 800 new jobs in the Leipzig factory until 2013. This investment aims to support the manufacture of current models under the sub-brand i.
BMW I3, previously introduced as the Megacity project, will be the model of the first series produced entirely as an electric car.
While BMW i8-based BMW Vision EfficientDynamics concept sport utility vehicle is poised to be a plug-in hybrid (electric motor combine a conventional engine). I8 sure BMW will steadily as a sports car with fuel economy and CO2 emissions comparable to small cars.
